The WordPress plugin not fitting the bill ? If not Expression Engine (not open source) handles this "out of the box".

I had missed it, Jane Wells posted some screnshots of WordPress 2.7 revamped interface ( http://snurl.com/4k6yr ).

Funny how it reminds me of DotClear 2 in some ways... only slicker web2.0ish but still the sidebar instead of tabs...
And the dashboard reminds me of Google Analytics. All in all, not a bad evolution for WordPress GUI.
